The Ministry of Transport today held its first workshop on its brand-new “Qatar Public Transport Master Plan” (QPTMP) - one of MOT’s key strategic transportation projects aimed at developing a sustainable, integrated, and future-ready public transportation system toward more sustainable and efficient options.
Also referred to as QPTMP, the Plan aims at enhancing public transportation accessibility, reducing traffic congestion and dependency on private vehicles, and expanding multimodal travel choices.
Aligned with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategy 2025–2030, the QPTMP supports the development of a more sustainable, efficient, and integrated transit system across the country.
Themed, “Project Overview & Existing Conditions Insights” and attended by MOT’s Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs Abdullah Saif Al-Sulaiti and representatives of entities concerned and stakeholders, the workshop marked a key milestone in the project’s journey, presenting the progress achieved to date while opening discussions on the upcoming phases, future priorities, and the development of an integrated implementation framework.
The plan represents a long-term strategic framework for planning, managing, and operating the public transportation system in a fashion that keeps pace with rapid urban, population, and economic growth, while ensuring the provision of safe, reliable, and accessible transit services that meet both current and future needs, said Public Transport Affairs Department Acting Director Ali Al-Darwish.
According to Al-Darwish, the QPTMP is important not only because of the plans and strategies it develops but also the practical tools that support decision-makers in prioritizing investments and future projects related to this vital industry.
The success of this project, he noted, relies on the integration of roles and the concerted efforts of the various entities concerned and stakeholders and today’s workshop reflects MOT’s commitment to adopting an evidence-based, participatory planning approach that ensures key stakeholders are engaged effectively every step of the way. “We are confident the constructive recommendations and outcomes resulting from this workshop will enrich the project’s results and support efforts to develop the transportation industry, thereby enhancing its efficiency and resilience,” he said.
The current phase of the QPTMP has involved the execution of several key activities. That included reviewing relevant policies, strategies, and studies, collecting and analyzing data, and conducting field studies and surveys. Additionally, the current state of the public transportation system was assessed, and key challenges and opportunities identified, paving the way for the development of future solutions and strategies.
The QPTMP embodies the State of Qatar’s commitment to promoting sustainable mobility and solidifying its leading position in public transportation planning at both regional and international levels, thereby contributing to better quality of life, enhanced connectivity between various areas, better accessibility, and higher levels of environmental sustainability.
