The Ministry of Transport today celebrated the World Maritime Day, which is observed on September 25 annually.

The MOT organized a kayaking and paddleboarding competition for employees of maritime industry in Qatar, aiming at highlighting the importance of that vital industry and role in sustainable development and marine environment protection.

Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Doha Marine Sports Club, and QTerminals Group, the competition was a unique occasion to raising awareness of marine environment protection and how maritime navigation connects nations around the world and enhances trade and economic ties.

MOT Assistant Undersecretary for Maritime Affairs Abdulaziz Al-Sulaiti, who appreciated the competition winners, said that marking the World Maritime Day with sporting and recreational activities reflects Qatar’s commitment to supporting the efforts of protecting seas and oceans, and fostering the sustainability of the industry, consistent with MOT’s endeavors to achieve the goals of the Qatar NDS3, MOT Strategy 2025-2030, and, ultimately, QNV 2030.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the UN specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It celebrates the World Maritime Day every year. This year’s theme is “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, reflecting the ocean’s vital role in the world economy. The ocean is a source of jobs and food for millions of people.
