Minister, IMO Secretary General Meet on Enhancing Relations

Minister of Transport H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani met with the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) H.E. Arsenio Dominguez.Meeting up on the sidelines of the inaugural edition of Seatrade Maritime Qatar, the two officials discussed Qatar-IMO relations in the areas of marine environment protection and Qatar’s support to global maritime industry.They also reviewed ways to enhance those ties, in addition to highlighting Qatar’s positive and efficient work at the IMO Council in Category C.

Minister Inaugurates “Seatrade Maritime Qatar” Conference & Exhibition 2025

Minister of Transport H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani today inaugurated the first edition of “Seatrade Maritime Qatar” Conference & Exhibition. In attendance were several ministers, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), several senior officials, ambassadors, CEOs from Arab and foreign countries, and decision makers of shipping and maritime services industries.In his opening speech, H.E. the minister said that maritime transportation is the artery of world trade and keeping it sustainable using the power of technology and enhanced international cooperation has become a strategic necessity.The Ministry of Transport’s hosting of this global event comes amid the continuing growth of Qatar’s maritime transportation industry, he said, adding that Qatar has invested significantly into developing the infrastructure projects of that vital industry to achieve remarkable boom at all fronts, particularly regarding commercial and tourist ports and the relevant supportive logistic services.Advanced Port InfrastructureThe advanced infrastructures and ecofriendly technologies deployed at Hamad Port have contributed to transforming it into a pivotal regional port for re-exportation, hitting high rankings on the WB’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) as it leapfrogged to 11th globally in 2023 from 38th globally in 2020, the minister said.The MOT’s all-out developments at Doha Port, he said, have laid the foundation for a robust infrastructure in cruise industry in step with highest universal standards to support the plans and revenues of the national tourism sector with giant cruise ship trips.Al Ruwais Port, he noted, continues its key role in the regional trade exchange after it had seen sustainable improvements, such as having new quays.National Logistics Services Strategy“We have put together a national strategy for logistic services industry to support supply chains and competitive advantages in regional and world trade, meet the requirements of economic diversification for logistics services and shipping, and boost Qatar’s profile as a global hub for shipping, transportation and logistics,” H.E. the minister said, as he refers to the pathway to supporting the national development requirements, economic diversification, and ecofriendly economic solutions that contribute to achieving the QNV 2030.Overseas InvestmentsThe State, he said, has adopted an approach of overseas investments in commercial ports to improve the competitive capabilities in terms of managing and operating the commercial ports to ultimately achieve sustainable development for the national economy through long-term investments, as the Qatari investment model adopts the principle of permanent partnership.Regional & Global PartnershipsConcluding his remarks, H.E. Qatar, Libya Update Air Services Agreement

Minister of Transport H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani and Libyan Minster of Transport H.E. Muhammad Salem Al-Shahoubi today signed an update to the air services agreement signed by the State of Qatar and the State of Libya on April 28, 2004.Signed in the Ministry’s offices, the update further liberalizes the provisions of the agreement to keep pace with the developments of the civil aviation industry.The agreement update aligns with Qatar’s endeavors to enhance connection with world countries through new air services agreements, allowing for the Qatari national carrier to expand its network and fly to more destinations worldwide.Following the signing ceremony, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations in the areas of transportation, civil aviation, air transportation activities, and ways to enhance them.The agreement update signing ceremony and the meeting were attended by Mr. Mohammed Faleh Alhajri, in charge of managing the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), and H.E. MOT Starts Hydrographic Survey of Qatar’s Waters

The Ministry of Transport has started a hydrographic surveying project to update the navigational nautical charts of the State of Qatar and establish a traffic separation scheme (TSS); a maritime traffic-management route-system, to regulate the entry and exit of vessels.The project meets the requirements, specifications, and recommended practices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).The 5-phase project will include specifying anchorage areas, locating ship wreckage in Qatari waters and siting of suitable navigational markers, updating Qatar’s nautical charts, suggesting vessel holding areas, providing a dedicated navigational marking system, and siting of navigational marks for locations of reserves.The project will also put together a program to regularly examine the navigational signs, using ecofriendly technologies such as batteries and solar panels, to achieve better lightening. The program also includes determining the additional dimensions that navigational markers should capture to fulfill the work needs to ensure safe navigation such as the sight.The project is especially important for enhancing and protecting the marine environment in step with Qatar’s economic growth and development requirements, using latest ecofriendly, surveillance, and marking systems in line with the goals of Qatar’s NDS3 and QNV 2030.The MOT will train its employees concerned with navigational aids services in line with the requirements of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA).The project is aligned with the action plans of the National Strategy for Logistic Services Sector (transportation and warehousing sector) 2024-2030 that aims at solidifying Qatar’s position as a global logistics hub, supporting economic diversification, and enabling traders and investors with less time and cost.
